We specialize in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and Performance Breathing

Clinic operated by a Board Certified Orofacial Myologist in Sherwood Park.

We provide effective therapy for patients who have issues related to muscles in-and-around the oral and facial complex.

We often work with, and rehabilitate the complex muscles in the head, neck, face, mouth, jaw – and everything within that!  The goal is to train and improve the strength, tone and range of motion of muscle groups. Simultaneously, we rehabilitate orofacial function so that patients can speak, chew, swallow correctly, which ultimately helps them breathe and sleep better as well.  We provide restorative therapy, pre-op/post- op therapy, and treatment of orofacial myofunctional dysfunctions and disorders (OMDs).

Orofacial myology - also called orofacial myofunctional therapy - is a type of palpable regime based on exercises that rehabilitates and re-balances muscles in and around the entire oral and facial complex including the tongue, jaw, airway space, and muscles used in swallowing.

The main goals of orofacial myology are to help better facilitate the usage of the nasal passageway, an effortlessly closed lip seal when at rest, and proper tongue resting position to help guide proper development of posture and the orofacial (mouth and face) complex.

With better balance in the oral and facial complex and affiliated structures this will promote more stability and comfort in the orofacial complex and rest postures of the affiliated muscle structures. Subsequently, a more optimal direction of dental arch development and growth pattern in children and adults is created.

Orofacial Myology is often discussed when practitioners are looking to treat:

  • Chronic headaches

  • Open mouth rest posture

  • Mouthbreathing

  • Open bites

  • TMJD or neck pains

  • Grinding, clenching or bruxing

  • Early signs of grinding in children

  • Snoring

  • Mild sleep apnea

  • Low tongue rest posture

  • Improper swallowing

  • Noxious non-nutritive habits like digit sucking, lip licking

  • Lisp

  • Orthodontic relapse

  • Tongue-tie/ ankyloglossia

  • Appliance therapy muscular retraining

Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of body.

Orofacial dysfunctions are often indicative of systemic health factors. Left untreated, orofacial issues may lead to further physiological problems.

Structural

Structural issues can include snoring, sleep apnea, tongue-tie and nasal obstruction. We are able to identify the underlying cause and provide treatment.

Myofunctional

How we use our facial muscles creates a daily pattern that impacts development. Myofunctional therapy exercises and techniques can help provide lasting improvements in a patients breathing, tongue placement, chewing and swallowing.

Behavioural

Sleep is a core component of overall health. Myofunctional therapy can provide regimen and hygiene to promote health sleep patterns that are synced with a body’s biological rhythm.

We do everything we can to help our patients obtain a healthier life and wellbeing.
